NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting

The goal of this course is to introduce, practice, and apply safe and effective pistol shooting techniques.

This course meets the educational requirements for non-resident concealed carry permits for the following states: Connecticut, Florida, & Virginia

Description:     The NRA Basics of Pistol Course (Instructor-Led) introduces students to the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for owning and using a pistol safely.

In this course we will cover basic firearms safety, fundamentals of pistol shooting (aiming, grip, stance & trigger control), ammunition components, malfunctions, and we will review the core elements of modern pistols & revolvers. We will practice loading and unloading firearms safely. We will cover how to recognize and clear malfunctions. We will discuss and demonstrate proper firearm maintenance and selection criteria.

Then we’ll head out to the range and put these principles in action.

  • Use of one of our guns (ammo not included)

Required Equipment:                   

  • Ear protection (electronic recommended)

  • Eye protection

  • Firearm  

  • Pistol or revolver.

    • MUST be legal in New Jersey

    • If you do not have a firearm, we will supply you with one for the live fire portion of the training.  We will have many different calibers on hand to choose from.

  • At least one magazine for semi-automatic pistols

    • MUST be legal in New Jersey – 10 round capacity.

  • Ammunition, please bring your own.

    • No reloads or handloads allowed.

    • If you are using one of our firearms, you must use our ammunition and there will be an extra charge (Cash or Credit Card Payment On-Site), please contact jeff@ironsightsacademy.net for an estimated cost based on the selected caliber and current ammunition prices.

Fight or “Flight” Package

If you do not currently own a firearm, or even if you do, and you would like an opportunity to test out different types, different calibers, then the Ironsight’s Sampler might be for you.  For the live-fire portion of this course, you can choose four different pistols / calibers from the list of options below.  This will give you an opportunity to try out different actions, different brands, and yes different calibers.  You will be provided with 20 rounds (22 or 22mag) or 10 rounds (all other calibers) of ammunition for each caliber selected.  Your instructor will provide recommendations based on your ability.

Pistol options include:

  • Ruger Mark IV (Caliber - 22lr)

  • Heritage Rough Rider Single Action Revolver (Caliber – 22lr or 22 magnum)

  • Glock 17 Semi-Automatic Pistol (Caliber – 9mm)

  • Beretta 92fs Semi-Automatic Pistol (Caliber – 9mm)

  • Ruger GP100 Double Action Revolver (Caliber - 38 special or .357 magnum)

  • Glock 21 Semi-Automatic Pistol (Caliber – 45 acp)

  • Ruger Vaquero Single Action Revolver (Caliber – 45 colt)

Cost: $75.00 per person - Payable on-site with cash or card.
