Permit to Carry a Handgun
New Jersey has become a “shall issue” state when it comes to your ability to legally carry a handgun. This process can be tricky, so we’ve prepare a short checklist for you to help you on your journey to legal concealed carry in NJ.
STEP 1. Obtain your NJ Firearms ID Card (for both NJ and Out of State Residents).
STEP 2. Purchase a firearm.
STEP 3. Ensure you are proficient with firearm safety, loading/unloading, and the fundamentals of pistol shooting.
For seasoned shooters you may be already be competent enough to qualify.
New shooters may (this is only a suggestion, not a requirement) benefit from taking the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting Class to prepare for the qualification class…either class below will adequately prepare you for the next step.
STEP 4. Complete the NJ Permit to Carry Qualification Course.
This four-hour course covers basic firearm safety, carry ammo, holster draw, holster selection & requirements, Use of Force, shooting qualification, how to apply / renew your PTC online and more.
The shooting qualification is 50 rounds total. 10 rounds at each distance of 15, 10, 7, 5, and 3 yards. 40/50 on target (FBI Q target) to pass.
Once completed, we will provide you with the NJSP Form 128 which you need to apply for your NJ PTC online.
